By the 1960s, advances in miniaturisation led to the development of minicomputers like the PDP-8 by Digital Equipment Corporation (1965). These smaller machines hinted at the possibility of computers becoming more accessible, though they remained too expensive for individuals.

The Birth of Personal Computing: The 1970s

The concept of personal computing gained momentum in the 1970s. Two technological breakthroughs were critical: the microprocessor and affordable memory. Intel’s 4004 (1971), the first microprocessor, and the subsequent 8080 (1974) paved the way for compact and affordable computing devices.

The Altair 8800, introduced in 1975, is often credited as the first personal computer. Created by MITS, this kit-based machine sparked enthusiasm among hobbyists. Its success inspired Bill Gates and Paul Allen to develop the first version of Microsoft BASIC, a programming language designed for the Altair.

This era also saw the rise of influential companies like Apple, founded in 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne. The Apple I, a user-friendly personal computer built on the premise of accessibility, set the stage for the industry’s rapid growth.

The PC Revolution: The 1980s

The 1980s marked the mainstream adoption of personal computers. IBM entered the market with the IBM PC in 1981, establishing industry standards and legitimizing the PC as a serious business tool. Its open architecture allowed third-party companies to create compatible software and hardware, fostering a dynamic ecosystem.

Apple responded with the Macintosh in 1984, the first computer to popularize the graphical user interface (GUI). Featuring a mouse and intuitive icons, the Macintosh revolutionized usability, making computers more approachable for non-technical users.
